Within this role, Brian is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of WIPO's domain name services offered under the WIPO-initiated UDRP, and related ccTLD policies. Supported by 25 international colleagues, these UDRP-related services include over 2,500 cases annually in recent years.
Brian also oversees domain name-related policy activities, including representing WIPO at ICANN and industry meetings. Brian also oversees WIPO’s annual UDRP training workshop, panelists' meeting, and UDRP jurisprudential tools.
Brian has been involved in WIPO’s proposals to ICANN for trademark‑based Rights Protection Mechanisms, including a domain name suspension mechanism, and a procedure directed at bad‑actor registries. He also helped lead a WIPO team that successfully proposed an “eUDRP” for paperless domain name case pleadings to ICANN’s Board.
Prior to his current role, Brian was Head of Legal Policy at Valideus, a domain name and new gTLD consultancy, where he provided twenty ".brand" clients with new gTLD-related policy and strategic advice, including drafting ICANN-compliant new gTLD registry policies. At Valideus, Brian also led a team that successfully negotiated with ICANN on specific Registry Agreement terms for ".brand" new gTLD applicants. Brian has previously been an active member of the INTA Internet Committee, New gTLD Registry Issues Subcommittee, and ICANN Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC). Brian began his legal career in Virginia (where he is still licensed to practice law) covering a range of trademark prosecution and maintenance and other non‑profit client needs.
